The signs of improvement are starting to show through. Since my last blog we have won 4 of our past five games and if we had shot the ball like I know we can we would have all five but that is sport and you have your bad days. The best improvement has been in our discipline on the court, especially last weekend against Nagoya.
成果が着実に出始めました。私の前回のブログ以来５試合中４試合に勝利することができました。本来のようにシュートが決まっていれば５戦全勝できたでしょうが、勝負事ですから上手くいかない日もあります。何よりもコート上で自分たちのルールに忠実にプレーできたことが一番の成果であり、特に先週末の名古屋Ｄ戦が素晴らしかったです。

In the games against Nagoya we set out to slow their transition offence and defend the 3-point line. Nagoya really do a good job of pushing the ball and playing at a high tempo. In both games we were able to achieve this goal holding them to 66-points. The team did a great job of making some adjustments and adhering to the game plan. I felt it was the most disciplined performance of the season and very pleasing from a coaching point of view.
名古屋Ｄ戦では、相手のトランジションオフェンスを低速化し、スリーポイントラインを守るプランを実行しました。名古屋はボールを素早く運び、早いテンポでプレーすることが非常に上手いです。両試合ともに我々のプランが功を奏し、６６点に抑えることができました。チームはこの試合に臨むにあたりいくつか変更した点がありましたが、それにも上手く順応し、ゲームプラン通りに試合を運べたことが素晴らしかったです。今シーズンの中でも、ゲームプランに最も忠実にプレーできた試合だったと感じましたし、コーチの目線からもとても嬉しい内容でした。

One of the most challenging aspects of professional sport is playing time. When you have 12 players suited for a game it is difficult to play all of the players especially given it is only a 40-minute game. Unfortunately, the reality is that some players are going to miss out on playing time and this is not easy to deal with. All players want to play and so they should. This is their job and they want to make sure they perform to the best of their abilities. What everybody must understand is that professional sport is not an equal opportunity environment. You don’t just get to play because you are training hard, you have to earn your opportunity by first of all performing well at training and then making sure you don’t waste your opportunity when playing time does come your way. It is important that players don’t play the victim and make sure they keep putting the extra work in and they are mentally prepared as well as physically prepared for when they are given a chance to play in games.
プロスポーツの中で、最も判断の難しい部分の１つにプレータイムがあります。１２名の選手が試合に向けた準備をし、４０分間という限られた時間の中で全員をプレーさせるのは難しいことです。残念ながら数名の選手が試合に出られないのが現実ですし、容易には受け入れることのできないことです。全選手が試合に出たいと思うのが当然ですし、全員にその機会が与えられるべきだと思います。しかしこれが選手の仕事であり、選手は自分の最高のパフォーマンスができるよう最善を尽くすものです。しかし、プロスポーツでは、平等に機会が与えられるものではないことを皆が理解しなければなりません。練習を真面目にしているからといってプレータイムがもらえるとは限らないのです。プレータイムは選手自身で勝ち取らなくてはなりません。まずは練習で良いパフォーマンスをし、試合に出られる機会があればチャンスを確実に生かすことでプレータイムは伸びるものです。重要なことはそういった選手たちが被害者的になるのではなく、自主的にトレーニングに励み精神的にも肉体的にも試合でプレーする機会が来た時のために最善の準備をすることです。

This weekend is important for our team. We play Kyoto who will be fired up and ready to beat us. Kyoto lost both games last weekend and we currently hold a 3 – 1 series lead on them. As I said in my last blog this is the down to the business end of the season and we have to come out and continue to show great discipline in our performances. We will need to play well to beat Kyoto, they are well coached and play a very good style of basketball. They are quite aggressive on defence and this creates some good scoring opportunities for them. Couple this with the inside presence of Josh Smith and it provides a lot of space for their perimeter scorers.
今週末は我々に取って重要な試合です。相手は京都、彼らは我々を打ち負かそうと燃えているでしょう。先週、京都は２試合ともに落とし、京都を相手に現在我々は３勝１敗と勝ち越しています。前回のブログでも述べましたがシーズンも佳境ですし、我々としてはチームのバスケに忠実にプレーし続けていかなければなりません。京都は徹底的にコーチングされた良いスタイルのバスケをするチームですし、京都に勝つためには我々自身良いバスケをしなくてはなりません。彼らはとてもアグレッシブなディフェンスをし、そこから効果的な得点チャンスを作ってきます。このディフェンスとジョシュ・スミス選手のインサイドの存在感がうまく融合することでアウトサイドのスコアラーたちのために大きなスペースが生まれます。

Lastly, I want to thank all of the fans that travel to our away games. In my 30 years of playing and coaching at the professional level I have never experienced such amazing support. It is such a good feeling to come out for a game and to see the Shiga colours in the stands. It was an even better feeling to reward you all with the great wins in Nagoya. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
最後にアウェーの試合に駆けつけて下さった全てのファンの皆さんに感謝の気持ちをお伝えしたいです。私は３０年間、選手またコーチとしてプロバスケに携わってきましたが、これほど熱心な応援を経験したことは未だかつてありません。アウェーの会場でレイクス色の応援席を見られるのは最高です。名古屋Ｄ相手に連勝し、現地まで応援に駆けつけて下さった皆さんに恩返しができたことが、なお一層嬉しかったです。心の底から皆さんに感謝致します。
