We never lose we learn

Coach Blog December 5

Our last home outing against Niigata was a tough weekend for us all. As a team, we were extremely upset to perform like that in front of our home fans. While you never like to lose a game the pleasing aspect from the game was the approach the players made to training to right our wrongs. The players themselves took ownership of the performance and showed great leadership by challenging each other to perform at a higher level both at training and in games.

This was certainly evident when we travelled to Toyama where we saw a much-improved performance that resulted in one win and one lose. Toyama are a tough team at home and we played three halves of outstanding basketball. Unfortunately, in the second game we couldn’t hold on to record two wins for the weekend. Again, I hate to lose but we were given some valuable lessons in the game and as long as we keep learning and moving forward then you can accept such results as a great learning tool.

Our motto is we never lose we learn. Evaluation is an important part of what we do and the team take it very seriously. With consistent evaluation, it allows you to learn invaluable lessons regardless of what the scoreboard reads. I did feel in the second Toyama game our half time lead contributed to the loss. It can be a dangerous situation sometimes when you have a good lead because you can start to play in a negative way and try to play not to lose. I felt we did this and we stopped playing the way we were when we built a 17-point lead and instead tried to just protect the lead. We have to learn to build on the lead and stay in an aggressive mindset. When we learn this, we will be tough team to beat.

This week see Ryukyu hit town. They currently sit on top of the West conference and will provide a very good challenge for our team. They are aggressive and get after you on the defensive end to try to set up their transition offence. They play a very physical brand of basketball and they will test our mental toughness as well as our physical toughness. If we have learnt our lessons from Toyama I am sure we will perform at a high level and be right in the contest.

See you all at the game

With energy
